Valentine's Day 'immorality checks' not a common policy of pakatan

Politicians say nay to V-Day 'immorality checks'
Thursday, February 10

PAS must learn to understand the culture of all Malaysians, comprising of various races and religions, they say.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim K...it Siang said it is not part of Pakatan's policy to organise moral policing as stated by PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hasan yesterday.

Kit Siang tweeted today that “moral policing on Valentine's Day or any other day is not Pakatan policy” as had been suggested by Nasrudin.

pas umno pemuda talks parliment 010709 nasrudin hassanYesterday, Nasrudin said authorities in Kedah, Penang, Kelantan and Selangor will carry out “immorality checks” on Feb 14 as part of a campaign to encourage a sin-free lifestyle.

Nasrudin said authorities would take action against those caught in the dragnet under Islamic laws.

Meanwhile, DAP Youth chief Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated firmly that the movement is not on the same boat with PAS Youth's approach to Valentine's Day.

"With reference to Pakatan states plan Valentine's Day crackdown, I want to stress that DAP and Dapsy do not agree with the approach taken by PAS Youth to act as 'moral police' to check on couples on Valentine's Day.

"It is beyond the powers of PAS Youth members to carry out such enforcement," Loke said in a statement today.

Selangor state legislative assembly speaker Teng Chang Khim tweeted that the PAS Youth chief should “keep your big mouth shut!”

NONEMCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong said Nasrudin has again shown that Pakatan lacks consensus in administration.

"Moral policing on Valentine's Day is an early sign of Pakatan's implementation of Islamic state policies in the civil sphere," Wee said in a statement today.

Wee adeed that whenever PAS shouts that the Islamic state is no longer an issue, it is actually working quietly to achieve its ultimate goal, which is to form an Islamic state.

'Explain jurisdiction of PAS Youth'

He also challenged Nasrudin to explain what is the jurisdiction of the PAS Youth wing and whether the state governments will allow PAS Youth to identify places where couples frequently visit and to arrange with the local government officers and Pas members to carry out moral policing.

“Although PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had said during the Tenang by-election that the Islamic state is already an old issue, we know that it was just a tactic to cheat voters as incidents have proven that Pakatan is implementing Islamic policies in the states they govern and this latest incident is one of the various examples,” he said, adding that it is shameful and sad that PAS has failed to walk the talk .

Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang in a statement urged PAS to mind their own business.

“I regret the statement by the PAS Youth chief that implied Valentine's Day would be filled with sinful activities and immoral acts.

“This is clearly a blatant insult to those who celebrate Valentine's Day in Malaysia and it would indirectly cast doubt over the morality of all those who will celebrate Valentine's Day,” he said.

Malaysia, a multiracial and religion country, has long been a moderate country and free of extremism, he said.

“I would advice PAS, in particular their youth section, to “mind their own business” during the celebration of Valentine's Day,” he added.

SHAH ALAM (Feb 10, 2011): Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad of PAS has clarified that there will be no crackdown on Muslims celebrating Valentine’s Day in Pakatan Rakyat states as claimed by PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hasan recently.

"No, there is not... going to be any crackdown as far as we (PAS) are concerned," Khalid said.

"His (Nasrudin) view is personal and does not represent the (state) government," said Khalid, who was accompanied by Kota Raja MP Dr Mariah Mahmud during a press conference at his service centre today.

Khalid, who also sits in PAS’s national political bureau, said the party was only concerned on youths who commit immoral activities on Valentine’s Day.

"Enforcement of Islamic laws will be carried out independently by the religious department. Checks will be carried out as usual, just like how it was done on any celebration in the past to prevent Muslim youths and couples from engaging in immoral activities.

"In fact, we never even discussed any crackdown on Valentine’s Day in our recent political bureau meeting," Khalid said, adding that Nasruddin was not authorised to speak on behalf of the party with regards to the issue.See more

It was known as St. Valentine's Day... after a Christian saint.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christ...ianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Over time, February 14 has become the date for exchanging love messages and a celebration of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. The date is marked by sending poems and simple gifts, such as flowers, to loved ones and secret loves. By far, Valentine's Day Flowers are the most popular gift today.

The History of Saint Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.See more
